It shouldn’t be thought of as a process reserved for artists and inventors and other “creative types.” The human mind, after all, has the creative impulse built into its operating system, hard-wired into its most essential programming code. At any given moment, the brain is automatically forming new associations, continually connecting an everyday x to an unexpected y.”

- Jonah Lehrer on how creativity really works. And they’re some of the only ones, really. An artist’s job is to sit outside what’s happening and reflect back to us where the human is in this. I think it’s a very valuable exercise. It’s just the opposite exercise of what most people probably think it is. It’s not for technologists to realize the visions of artists. It feels much more like it’s for artists to contextualize the visions of technologists.”

- Douglas Rushkoff (via azspot)

notational:

An idea Mischa came up with a few days ago, LearningPaper is a way to ask questions and share techniques with our budding Paper community. Use it on Twitter too!

Done with the Paper App, as usual, on the iPad 1 with a the Bamboo stylus

This sketch has been done quite quickly, in about 2 hours and a half, using the black pencil rather than the fountain pen, as in my previous sketches. It appears to be faster, since I usually overlay almost all the draft with the other tools and colors.

As usual, all of the Paper tools were used, but mainly pencils and watercolors.

I wanted to try out using an iPad as the initial portion of my workflow for when I’m not in my studio and then use it as a jumping off point for when I was ready to flesh it out on the desktop. So, while out and about, I doodled this spacerhino/hyena-esque creature in the iPad app, “Paper” by FiftyThree Studios (which, as I mentioned last week, is the first iPad drawing app I enjoy).

The iPad’s hardware capabilities/accuracy are a limiting factor but they prove good enough for a concept sketch to get rough ideas out which I can take home and begin to bring to life. While I wouldn’t use an iPad to sketch things out when I have access to my studio, it provides me a great place to begin to form initial ideas on the go to revisit later.
